Symphony No 3

Sibelius had achieved his international breakthrough with great success when the third symphony was written, and that joy is heard in every note – warmth, happiness and sincerity.

This classically influenced symphony was written in 1905-1907. The première was originally intended to take place in London, where Sibelius had appeared with great success the season before. But the work dragged on and it was not until September 1907 that the symphony had its first performance – then in Helsinki, with the composer as conductor. And it certainly differed from its two predecessors: “The third symphony is a completely new symphonic concept”, according to conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste.
